Not All EQ is Equal

Most often when a quiz opportunity appears on my screen, I go the other way. But, this particular one was a topic I find most interesting. Test Your Emotional Intelligence. It's about the strength you have over your actions and reactions. According to the Institute for Health and Human Potential (IHHP), "Research from Harvard Business School demonstrated that EQ (Emotional Quotient) counts for twice as much as IQ and Technical Skills in determining who will be successful!" So, why are we not utilizing this more in business? There are personality tests galore and while I believe in their value, someone's self awareness and emotional control is a huge "need to know" before someone sits down at a conference table in a negotiation and looses their - perspective. Do you know how you stack up?

I have so often heard that when company's are looking to hire, they really never know what they're getting. Shouldn't EQ be one of the evaluation choices? Two of my favorite people to follow on the subject are Dr. Travis Bradberry, Coauthor of Emotional Intelligence 2.0 & President at TalentSmart, and Daniel Goleman Author of What Makes a Leader: Why Emotional Intelligence Matters. They have given me terrific insight. This list, created by Mr. Goleman, is however, one of my favorites for it's simplicity - EI list .

How many people have you worked for, or with, that were smart, technically savvy, but lacked control of their emotions? The ability to be self aware and the is often the missing piece. I have personally collected my "to emulate or not emulate" lists from past employers, employees, leaders, and co-workers. And, if I would list the reasons, most would come down to their EI.

The good news is that it's like a muscle and muscles can be trained, grown, and enhanced. Consider the partners, spouses, friends, confidantes, mentors, and most important people in your circle - the amount of EI they possess has a dramatic affect on your life. Imagine the impact you can have on others - with your 6-pack of EI!

By the way, I did click the link and to my relief, scored with high EQ - you?
